> (Galileo was never in Blacksburg. But we intend to remedy that deficiency by discussing the reception of his science in seventeenth-century France, thereby also receiving him ourselves.) Speakers will discuss such topics as: the diffusion of Galileo's mechanics and astronomy in Paris (through Marin Mersenne); quantitative experimentation and the role of numerical tables in Galileo, Mersenne, and their circle; Descartes's reaction to Galileo's physics; Thomas Hobbes's reception of Galileo's mathematics.
