Call for Papers and Sessions


We invite papers for presentation at the 2003 AAHPSSS conference to be held at Whitley College, University of Melbourne, from midday Monday June 30 to midday Thursday July 3 2003. 

This year's conference will have a special emphasis on the History of Australian Science and Eighteenth Century Physics to mark the retirement of Rod Home and his contribution to the discipline.

A form is available, for the submission of abstracts, on the AAHPSSS conference web-page.  This page will be accessible via a link from University of Melbourne HPS website http://www.hps.unimelb.edu.au and the AAHPSSS website http://www.usyd.edu.au/hps/aahpsss/ 

Applicants are asked to complete the form indicating their contact details including institutional affiliation and E-mail address, a title and abstract of 200 words and to indicate whether you would like a 30 or 45 minute time slot (including discussion time).

Those interested in putting together a thematic session are invited to do so.  Please submit an abstract for the session on the online form, indicate the name of the session convenor, the duration of the proposed session (either 1.5 hours or multiples thereof), indicate all session participants by name and ensure submission of abstracts by the nominated deadline.

The final date for submission of abstracts is May 2 2003.  Applicants will be notified of the acceptance of their paper via E-mail by 16 May.  Please note that normally only one paper per applicant will be considered for inclusion in the conference.  

Enrolled honours and postgraduate students wishing to apply for an Ian Langham Bursary should submit an abstract as above plus three copies of the full written version of the paper to the AAHPSSS executive.  Both must be received no later than May 2 2003 (see below for further details).

Call for papers for an Ian Langham Bursary and for the Ian Langham Prize 2003 

The Ian Langham Bursaries provide financial assistance to honours and postgraduate students presenting a paper at the AAHPSSS conference.

Due date for applications: Abstracts and Full Papers 2 May 2003.
 
In order to be considered for a bursary students must submit their application by filling in the submission of abstracts form on the AAHPSSS conference web-page, providing contact details including institutional affiliation and E-mail address, a title and abstract of 200 words. This page will be accessible via a link from University of Melbourne HPS website http://www.hps.unimelb.edu.au and the AAHPSSS website http://www.usyd.edu.au/hps/aahpsss/  Once completed the form should be forwarded electronically as an email attachment to Rosemary Robins: [log in to unmask]  To be received no later than 2 May 2003.

In addition three copies of the full written version of the paper along with evidence of student status is to be received by 2 May 2003 at the following address: Dr John A. Schuster, School of HPS, University of New South Wales, Sydney, 2052. 
 
Papers should be no more than 3500 words in length, excluding notes, and should be scholarly, free standing works with the basic format of a short journal article in history, philosophy or social studies of science, medicine or technology.  Criteria for selection of eligible papers includes whether they engage scholarly dialogues in the HPS/STS literature, whether they evidence knowledge and appropriate use of HPS/STS methodologies, and that the author is an enrolled student (excluding full-time academic staff members, but not casual teachers) who must be enrolled in either an honours or postgraduate program. You must also be able to provide, on request, the written support of your supervisor.

Intending applicants are strongly advised to consult their supervisor(s) at the earliest opportunity in order to plan and commence their paper.  Bursary recipients will be informed prior to the conference and should plan to provide receipts for expenses incurred up to the amount awarded for reimbursements; monies are generally distributed according to distance between the home institution and the conference venue.  The best paper will be awarded the Ian Langham Prize at the conference although the AAHPSSS Executive reserves the right not to award the Prize.
