The British Province of Carmelites, a religious order in the Roman
Catholic Church, in conjunction with the Centre for Medieval Studies at
the University of York, is holding an academic symposium in York on Friday
16th May. The symposium is on Carmelite culture, history and spirituality,
focussing especially on the role of lay-people and women religious in the
order from the Middle Ages to the present day.
The symposium is being organised to mark the 550th anniversary of the
papal letter "Cum Nulla". A mass will be held in York Minster at 11.30am,
and the conference runs from 2-5pm. Further details can be found at

Anyone interested in making a brief presentation on Carmelite literature,
culture, art, liturgy, history, archaeology, is asked to contact the

The Province hopes to publish the proceedings of the symposium, and anyone
interested in publishing on the above topics unable to attend the May
event is still invited to submit.
