MECCSA colleagues,
Could you please pass on the following information, about MAs in Media/Film and Cultural Studies at the University of Sunderland, to any graduating students who might be interested? In particular, they could be interested in the possibility of getting one of the ten European Social Fund bursaries that we have for academic year 2003-4. These bursaries pay the cost of full-time fees, and also provide additional small payments to help with living expenses. More below...
MA MEDIA AND CULTURAL STUDIES / MA FILM AND CULTURAL STUDIES
These MAs are one year full-time or two years part-time. They are taught by staff based at the University of Sunderland Centre for Research in Media and Cultural Studies, which is moving to a newly constructed building for the start of academic year 2003-4.
The MAs share a common 'core' module, 'Perspectives in Film, Media and Cultural Studies'.
Students then choose from a range of options that are validated for their named awards. For example, on MA Media and Cultural Studies, these may include 'Consumption and Everyday Life', 'Media Constructions of Race and Islam', 'Language, Culture and Power' and 'Electronic Media Cultures'. On MA Film and Cultural Studies, options may include 'Hollywood: Race, Gender and Genre', 'Feminism and Film', 'Imag(in)ing Indigenous People' and 'Representing Sexualities'.
Finally, students write a 12-15,000 word dissertation.
Some places are still available for an October 2003 start. In addition, five European Social Fund bursaries are available for full-time students on each of these MAs, subject to certain conditions. Decisions on the award of these bursaries will be based on merit, and will be made by the MA Programme Leader in consultation with an Associate Dean of the School of Arts, Design, Media and Culture.
Application forms and copies of the postgraduate prospectus, which contains more detailed information on the MAs, are available from University of Sunderland student recruitment on 0191-515-3000. If you are applying for a full-time place and wish to be considered for an ESF bursary, please state this on your application form. Any further queries should by addressed to the Programme Leader, Dr Shaun Moores, via email ([log in to unmask]).
