Curriculum Online - Cultural Content Metatagging Pilot
Curriculum Online is a one-stop online catalogue of digital learning resources. Resources on the site include websites, lesson plans, CD-ROMs, interactive videos and simulation software organised by the National Curriculum programmes of study, QCA schemes of work and topics.
It is important that the educational resources from the cultural sector are made available to teachers and students through Curriculum Online. Although some cultural institutions have registered their content on Curriculum Online, the DfES and DCMS are keen to encourage more institutions to become involved.
In order to support this aim, three cultural organisations will be invited to assist the Curriculum Online Team in testing tagging process and procedures. This will take the form of:-
* assistance in the initial registration
* contract advice
* site visit to assist the with the tagging process
* support in identifying National Curriculum relevance and links to National Strategies
* advice on Digital Learning Content design (pedagogy, usability, interactivity)
Representatives of the institutions will also be invited to a meeting to share experiences, to promote Curriculum Online and to suggest ways in which the process can be improved to maximise the participation of the cultural sector in Curriculum Online.
The institutions themselves will benefit by being guided through the process, by maximising their visibility within Curriculum Online and by acting as advocates within the sector. Direct costs, such as any travel required, will be met.
The pilot will be available to those institutions that already have relevant educational content online, and have not begun the process of registering their content. The aim will be to identify one institution in each of the three categories below:
* Large National Institution
Example: an Invest to Save funded project, which may cover areas such as citizenship
Management capability/awareness: aware of the policy/educational terrain and drivers and the importance of content standards
Technical capability/awareness: ideally using a web publishing/content management/collections management system with some of the metadata already present so they would be looking at integration/extension issues for Curriculum Online
* Small Local/Regional Institution
Example: an IT Challenge Fund, MGEP or small HLF-funded project that has created online educational resources
Management capability/awareness: may need bringing up to speed on some aspects of the Curriculum Online offering and how it could benefit them in terms of sustainability and fulfilling their own educational objectives
Technical capability/awareness: likely to have a limited if any existing metadata or management systems, or a website with hard-coded navigation
* Larger project / NOF-Digitise Consortium
Example: Sense of Place Consortia
Management capability/awareness: they understand some of the digital content policy and technical drivers, but have not developed content specifically for the National Curriculum
Technical capability/awareness: have already implemented metadata (if not content management) and have actively participated in creating records for the www.EnrichUK.net portal
Ideally those selected will be demonstrating interesting blends of digital content with real-world experience.
As a first step, those who are interested in taking part in the pilot are invited to send information under the following headings and to send it to David Dawson by 11 April 2003.
