Having undertaken an extensive digitisation and documentation programme
over the last 3 years, we are now planning ways in which we can increase
access to our collections using these resources. A public access version of
our collections database will be installed in the museum galleries shortly,
but we are now considering how we can deliver collections information
remotely. Previous research into the costs of hosting our collections
database online indicates that these would be very high for us, and as an
independent museum, not a viable ongoing option at this time. As such, we
are considering what feels like the slightly retrograde step of putting the
collections on CD-ROM. (We also aim to produce a new printed museum
catalogue, but this would not be a comprehensive listing of all the
collections).
Has anyone recently produced a CD-ROM of their collections? What format did
it take? How was it produced - in house or with an external company? And
how useful has it been? Any advice or input would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Sarah
