Fancy a stroll around a lake surrounded by rhododendrons in bloom? Or
sipping a drink, sitting in the garden, chatting to colleagues before
dinner? You could even listen to a paper or two! There is still time
to book a place at:

Aslib IT & Communications Group Annual Conference
14 - 16 May 2003
Danbury Park Conference Centre, Danbury, Chelmsford, Essex.

Wednesday 14 May
Wednesday Evening:

The Power of Foresight
Ian Pearson, Futurologist, BT

"Accuracy is impossible for all but the most trivial question, but
blurred vision is better than none at all." Ian will share his insights
into the future of many aspects of our daily lives - from work to
leisure, and from capitalism to the care economy.

Thursday 15th May 2003

New ideas for library design in the age of the Digital Library
Sarah Godowski, Research and Business Development Director. Bisset
Adams.
Sarah will describe recent ground-breaking work in the public sector
where she has used her commercial retail expertise to create new levels
of engagement with libraries and learning opportunities in Tower
Hamlets’ ‘Idea Stores’ and give guidance on how we can use these ideas
in our own environments.

Through the Looking Glass - A Publisher's-eye view of trends in
Technology Libraries
Sara Hancock, Group Marketing Manager for Technology, John Wiley & Sons
Sara will present the results of a recent survey of UK libraries that
publisher John Wiley has undertaken to better understand their

pressures that the 21st century has brought them.

Establishing the Value of your Information Service
Liz Blankson-Heman, Manager of Information Professional Development
Programs in Europe, Dialog Corporation
In today’s environment, most libraries have to prove their value to the
organisation. Liz will go beyond traditional "soft" metrics (e.g. time
saved) to take a hard look at the business value information
expenditures bring to those who pay for them.

Friday 16th May 2002

Personalising the Digital Library
Anne Ramsden, OU
Personalisation offers the promise of enhancing the library user’s
experience by tailoring the interface to each person’s requirements and
preferences. Anne will review the present state of personalisation in
digital libraries.

Creating Communities in the Digital World
Janet Tomlinson, IEE
Libraries are social places, with users learning from each other through
observation or discussion how best to use the resource. Janet will
describe how this sense of community can be created in the digital
world, based on the IEE’s Professional Networks. These Networks bring
together undergraduate students to distinguished and highly qualified
professionals; the IEE saw the benefits of exploiting web-based
technologies to offer more tailored and personalised services.

Where Seagulls Dare
Graham Coult, Editor Managing Information
Managing Information is now running a campaign called 'Where Seagulls
Dare.' One seagull on its own could give you a nasty peck, put an entire
flock can do an awful lot of damage. The purpose of the campaign is to
make librarians and information managers aware of the power they wield
when they gather together to pool success stories in order to emphasises
to decision makers the importance of sound information management
policies developed and implemented by experts. Graham will illustrate
the session with success stories he has received in response to the
campaign, and will be inviting participation from the floor in terms of
suggesting new success stories, and decision makers that need to be
targeted.
