format enhancements, and additional administrator tools as detailed

Direct Export from BioMed Central

RefWorks users can now export records from BioMed Central directly into
RefWorks. Simply select the RefWorks option on the BioMed Central search
results screen.

BioMed Central <http://www.biomedcentral.com/> is an independent
publishing house committed to providing immediate free access to
peer-reviewed biomedical research. All the original research articles in
BioMed Central journals are available online without charge or any other
barriers to access.

Direct export to RefWorks is also available from:

Service

Program Enhancements

Back Up and Restore

RefWorks users can now back up and restore their databases and custom
output formats. While the ability to export the data has been included
in the program from the beginning, with this new feature, the back up
and restore of a database will maintain the correct RefID numbers,
folders, and any custom output formats that have been created.

Note that the restore will overwrite everything that is currently in the
database. Thus, any changes made between the time the database is backed
up and the time it is restored will not be available after the database
is restored.

You can also choose to independently back up either the database or the
output formats individually. Users may find this helpful when sharing
output formats with colleagues.

New Help File

The new Help file includes a Table of Contents, an index, and the
ability to search the entire file for a specific term.

Output Format Enhancements

Bibliography Settings

Some output formats require subsequent citations by the same author to
have the second author replaced with another character, most often
several dashes. This feature has been added and the MLA, Chicago and
Turabian output formats have been changed.

Several new customer requested sorts have been added to the bibliography
settings:
 <http://www.csa.com/csa/graphics/refbullet.gif> All Authors & Title
(MLA)
 <http://www.csa.com/csa/graphics/refbullet.gif> Title, Year descending
 <http://www.csa.com/csa/graphics/refbullet.gif> Periodical, Year
descending
 <http://www.csa.com/csa/graphics/refbullet.gif> Year descending, Author
 <http://www.csa.com/csa/graphics/refbullet.gif> Year descending, Title
 <http://www.csa.com/csa/graphics/refbullet.gif> Year descending,
Periodical
 <http://www.csa.com/csa/graphics/refbullet.gif> Year ascending, Title
 <http://www.csa.com/csa/graphics/refbullet.gif> Reference ID Number

Sorting has been modified to ignore "a" "an" and "the" when they are the
first word in a phrase.

A page break may now be added to the bibliography. For example, if you
want your bibliography on a separate page after the paper you can add a
page break command, \f, in the Reference List Title box.

Footnote and Endnote Settings

Citations can now be inserted into endnotes as they have been with
footnotes. The endnote must first be created in Microsoft Word and then
the citation inserted.

In a footnote or endnote you can now add special handling to repeated
consecutive references and sources. For example, you can italicize
"ibid."

Line spacing, single, double or triple, is now an option for
footnotes/endnotes.

"/s" to cite a specific page in-text or in a footnote or endnote. The /s
switch is an override for the page numbers stored in the database
record. By applying this switch you can cite specific page numbers both
in-text citation and in a generated footnote or endnote. For example, a
footnote citation would look like {{1 Smith /s43}}. The footnote will
include the page number 43 instead of the page number(s) in the
reference itself.

Administrator Tool Enhancements

Z39.50 User Names and Passwords

RefWorks administrators now have the ability to add Z39.50 user names
and passwords, allowing site wide access to their paid subscriptions. In
our previous release, if a user wanted to access a paid Z39.50 site
(such as CSA or OCLC), the user needed to enter the institution's user
name and password before access would be allowed. With this new feature,
the administrator may enter this information one time in the
administrator tools and all users will automatically be granted access.

We recommend adding these databases, as well as any others that are used
frequently, to the preferred list. This will help users avoid confusion
regarding which databases they have access to and which not.

Customize Database Name for Import Filters

When adding databases to the list of preferred imports in the
administrator tool, you can now edit the name of the database.

Create an Organization-Wide Output Format

We recognize that each organization may have unique formats that are
used for specific purposes. While individual users have always been able
to customize styles, organizations having a specific style - or
variation of a style - that they want everyone to use can create an
output format and add it to the list of formats available to the entire
organization. It is also possible for the administrator to take a format
from a user and, using the new back up and restore feature, add this to
the organization-wide list as well.
