Dear all
Regarding the following MARBI proposal -
Proposal No. 2004-03: Designating the Privacy of Fields 541, 561 and
583 in the MARC 21 Bibliographic and Holdings Formats. Online at:
http://www.loc.gov/marc/marbi/2004/2004-03.html
I would strongly support the above proposal. We have problems with donated
items and gifts of money for certain items. Some people want their
contributions acknowledged and some want it hidden. At present we only have
the choice to completely suppress all 541/561/583 fields from view or show
them all. We have chosen to suppress the field for the sake of the Data
Protection Act but this means we have to use the wrong field for those
people who wish their contribution to be noticed! To be able to pick and
choose whether to show or suppress individual fields/subfields would not
only be most useful, but would enable us to comply with both the Freedom of
Information Act and the Data Protection Act.
