I rather agree with Leonard that CILIP should raise with the British
Computer Society their proposed use of the postnominals "CInf". I do think
this would lead to confusion.
As a member of both organisations myself, I'd rather been hoping the BCS
would adopt the term "Chartered Information Systems Engineer", but there
doesn't currently seem to be a BCS forum where the name thing can be
discussed. "Chartered Informatician" sounds a bit too like "Mortician" for
my liking: adopting it could be a grave mistake :-)
Postnominals can be tricky things: in my Singapore days, when I could still
get all mine on one line of a business card [:-)], I showed around a visitor
from Kenya, who left, clutching my card which read "Bruce Royan BA ALA MBA".
I was impressed with the efficiency of the Singapore Postal Service when I
later received a thank you note addressed to: Mr Bruce R. Baalamba

Subject: Should "CInf" be a computing qualification?
As a member of both the British Computer Society (BCS) and CILIP I was
rather concerned to see that the BCS propose to introduce the
designation "CInf" for their members. I have not seen an authoritative
expansion of this title, but I assume that it stands for something like
"Chartered Information [Systems] Professional" or "Chartered
Informatician".
This leads to a potential conflict with CILIP, which seems to have an
equal claim to a chartered title based on the word "information",
whether or not it chooses to use it. I would have thought that the
distinguishing factor of the BCS is that they use computers, as
reflected in their name, so that a title such as CComp or CComput would
be more appropriate. I have raised these concerns in a BCS forum, but
they have been dismissed rather lightly there.
Has this issue been discussed officially within CILIP? Has CILIP made
any comment to the Privy Council, which has to approve these titles?
Does CILIP have any plans to introduce a chartered title of its own
other than the rather cumbersome statement given in the following
extract from its Web site:
"The achievement of Chartered Membership carries with it the right
to the postnominal letters MCLIP, Chartered Member of the Chartered
Institute of Library and Information Professionals."
