I have a feeling that with the current level of mortgage repayments, child
care costs etc no "professional" or middle class couple would like to live
for a lengthy period on the income of one partner only? Male, female, gay or
whatever the national economy is now predicated on two people in paid work,
which it was not in 1953. No doubt somebody can give us the figures for the
number of paid hours worked per household per week, across the 20th century.

You are right that this suggestion is objectionable but I'm curious as to
why it is apparently more demeaning for male librarians than female to be
dependent on their partner's salary ?

No, this is the sort of suggestion which must be countered. It's simply not
acceptable for a graduate profession, one that I would assume wants to be
taken seriously, to be predicated on this basis. (Not to say quite demeaning
for a lot of male librarians- I write from personal experience). KMCO.
