To all LIS-CILIP users...
It was last summer that LIS-CILIP was first established, as a two-way communication channel for CILIP and all its members. With the initial emphasis on comment on CILIP's draft Corporate Plan, the list has subsequently developed into a forum for discussion of a wide range of issues of direct concern to CILIP members. During this period both CILIP Councillors and staff have kept a close eye on the discussions, intervening from time to time as has seemed appropriate. Now, as CILIP passes its first anniversary, and with the benefit of several months' experience of debates on the list, CILIP Council has authorised the creation of guidelines for its future use.
You can refer to these Guidelines at any time by going to...

...and the Guidelines are also reproduced below.
Best wishes,
Tim.

LIS-CILIP: GUIDELINES FOR USE - April 2003
Online discussion list of CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals
Who uses LIS-CILIP?
LIS-CILIP is a forum to enable CILIP members (whether personal or institutional) to raise and discuss issues about CILIP itself, or wider issues that fall within CILIP's remit.
CILIP Council members and CILIP staff keep an eye on the various topics under discussion, and will respond factually to issues raised from time to time, where this is likely to be helpful.
Often a discussion will be allowed to run its course before a factual response is posted, so as to give everyone who wishes an opportunity to contribute, after which factual responses to the various issues raised during the discussion can be consolidated into a single posting.
What may I do?
Seek information on any aspect of CILIP's work beyond what is already covered on its web site - www.cilip.org.uk - or available in CILIP publications.
Post comments on any aspect of CILIP's work, including its policies, governance and services.
Seek information or post comments on any wider issue that falls within CILIP's remit - e.g. the information society, the knowledge economy, lifelong learning, information competency, intellectual property, freedom of information, censorship, promotion of social inclusion through access to library and information services.
What may I not do?
Post any promotional information that does not involve CILIP, its Groups or Branches.
'Flame' - i.e. express views in an inflammatory or offensive way.
Adopt a destructive approach to the issues under discussion. Part of the aim of this list is to consult with members to develop and improve CILIP; by all means be critical, but a constructive, forward-looking approach is essential.
Raise trivial issues, or issues not relevant to CILIP.
Hide behind aliases - please identify both yourself and, if appropriate, your place of work.
In general...
Keep postings brief.
Avoid allowing messages to grow and grow with each successive posting; just retain the portion(s) of any previous posting(s) on which you actually want to comment.
