Are you a CILIP member? Because if you are, then it's not a matter of
"those CILIP people", it's "we CILIP people", because like any professional
body, CILIP is its membership. There is no magic wand to wave that will
suddenly make all librarians respected and highly paid, and I'm getting a
little tired of all these implications that it could all be done so easily
if only "they" could be bothered. How about some practical suggestions if
it's so simple? CILIP is doing a lot to raise the status and awareness of
librarians nationally - the Knowledge Economy report mentioned earlier is a
shining example - but when it comes down to individual pay and status it's
up to us to work as individuals, with our colleagues, and through our trade
unions, using the tools, information and support CILIP provides, to
demonstrate to our employers and our users just what we do contribute
professionally and why we deserve a fair deal. It's certainly not easy and
it's very long term, but it's better than waiting for someone else to do it
for you.

Before we do, could we :-
a) Have some recognition from the people on this list from CILIP that this
issue is important to the majority of the membership, and needs to be
recognised and acted upon rather than sticking their collective heads in the
sand whenever it is mentioned.
And
b)(At least) have those CILIP people pledge to begin a process of looking at
the issue at all levels of the profession and start to actively do something
about addressing the concerns of the membership.?
Too much to ask I suppose.
