> Three out of the five Whitbread Book of the Year Award finalists chose libraries as the settings for their video presentations at the Whitbread Book Awards ceremony last night, in which CILIP is one of the supporting partners.

> Paul Farley, winner of the Whitbread Poetry Award for his collection The Ice Age (Picador), said that Liverpool> '> s central library in William Brown Street compensated for the lack of books in his home as a child. First Novel Award winner Norman Lebrecht, author of The Song of Names (Review), explained how he read his way systematically through authors at Stoke Newington Library in London. Finally, Whitbread Book of the Year Award outright winner Claire Tomalin obtained special permission to film in the Pepys Library at Magdalene College, Cambridge, when talking about her biography Samuel Pepys: the Unequalled Self (Viking).

> This is the second year of association with the Whitbread Book Awards, with CILIP inheriting the partnership originally developed in 2002 through the Library Association. Other partners include the National Reading Campaign, the Booksellers> '> Association and Amazon.co.uk.

> This year Karen Tyerman, Assistant Director (Libraries and Lifelong Learning) at Brent Council, and a CILIP Member, joined the judging panel for the Biography Award, participating in the assessment of a record 101 entries. In addition, libraries up and down the country displayed point of sale material promoting the various category winners and other shortlisted titles.
