This is the best reply I've seen to the current debate.Worth reading, as it
is useful, and informative.

Well I have to say I'm with Mike.
Lists are a major forum for debate. You take up people's time when
they read what you've written, but communication does require
time, and this seems a remarkable effective way of debating
issues. Skim, delete, save bits - the archive's always there if you
need it. If an email has useful ideas in it, or gives valuable
information, I certainly don't mind if it's long. We all have our own
styles, and succint is preferable, but it would be unfortunate if
anyone were put off contributing because they were scared of being
told off for being a tad verbose. As John says elsewhere, "long
meaningful sentences", "thought" - all that sort of thing. Claire
Innes' guidelines earlier today are very sensible and helpful - how
guilty should I feel that I don't always abide by them?
Flaming - well, that's wrong. Although some correspondents can be
forgiven for justifiable anger at the way things are, putting people
down isn't on. And that's the real problem with communicating this
way - we have no instant feedback and only rather pretentious
ways like (:- or whatever for indicating nuances, so it's easy to
seem over sharp.

But we're not. And it isn't.
