A discussion session at Umbrella on Pay and conditions and CILIP's role in
improving the situation would be a good idea as would be a discussion
leading to a clear strategy for CILIP to position itself as the
professional body of choice for all information professionals and not just
librarians. If the organization is seen as primarily representing lowly
paid undervalued professionals then it will have a difficult time
persuading
Knowledge Managers etc that they should become members.

I have recently received my copy of the Umbrella 2003 Programme.
For the session Thursday 10.00 - 12.00 Discussion session with Cilip
Council, I would like to suggest as a topic:-
Pay, conditions and image of the library profession., and the role of Cilip
in improving all.

To all participants in this debate...
Just to follow up on Bob McKee's email of about 24 hours ago on the low pay
debate, there will indeed be a more formal response later this week setting
out what CILIP, under the direction of its Council, Committees and Panels,
is doing in this whole field. It just seems sensible to let everyone who
wishes to add their point to either of the debates do so first, so that all
the issues raised can be dealt with together.
You may like to know in the meantime that the Member Recruitment &
Retention
Panel said at its first meeting that it would like to see LIS-CILIP much
more actively used. This pair of linked debates shows just how much it can
prove its value as a forum for Members' views.
