IRAQ - UPDATE ON BOOK SUPPLY
The British Council is in the process of setting up its new office in
Baghdad, to be run initially by local members of staff working to the
newly-appointed Director, Adrian Chadwick. The Council are organising
donations of old and new books to Iraq, to be shared between university
libraries damaged in the war. The British Council are being asked to
help the PA to identify possible members of an inward mission from Iraq
to the UK at the time of the London Book Fair.
Despite talk of billions of dollars in International aid coming into
Iraq, most tertiary institutes appear to have seen no benefit as yet. At
a meeting last week, the Director of Baghdad University reported that
the total budget (excluding lecturers salaries) received so far was
$20,000. The university has 70,000 students and 35 separate colleges.
Classes started early October and students have very few books.
