As MELCOM-International's representative on the EURAMES Council, I give
here a brief report on the Council meeting in Paris on Friday 4 July
2003. The main points of interest were:-
1. Two of the founding fathers of EURAMES, Derek Hopwood and André
Raymond, were unanimously elected as Honorary Members of the Council.
Derek Hopwood is, of course, also a former President of MELCOM.
2. A new call was issued for bids to host the Second World Congress of
Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES), in 2006 or 2007. The deadline is
October 2003. It was generally agreed that, for political and security
reasons, it should again be convened in Europe, rather than in the
Middle East or the U.S.A.
3. The next EURAMES Conference will be held in 2005. Possible venues are
Florence, Leiden, Copenhagen and Madrid.
4. It was agreed to compile a new online version of the EURAMES
directory of _European expertise on the Middle East and North Africa_.
Further details, questionnaires, etc. will be issued in the coming year.
5. The E-mail EURAMES Info Service will continue to relay announcements
of relevant conferences, publications, research programmes, job
vacancies, and scholars' initiatives of all kinds. Recent criticisms of
the political content of some such announcements were rejected. Those
wishing to subscribe should send a message to Professor Günter Meyer,
President of EURAMES and editor of the Info Service. at
