Many thanks to those who responded to my query about the use of ALC4.
There were six respondents from a range of Universities, and their
answers are summarised below.
Respondent one:
It is used as the equivalent of discretionary points at the top of
lecturer grade B, in recognition of extra responsibilities not deemed
sufficient for ALC5. As such there is no right of progression to
ALC5.
Respondent two:
It is used as a specific grade in a tiered system which is common to
the entire University. Directors of services are ALC6, deputies are
ALC5, and managers are ALC4.
Respondent three:
Here it is used for staff who have surpassed ALC3 but do not meet
ALC5 criteria.
Respondent four:
Do not use the grade
Respondent five:
It is used for branch librarians and the head of
cataloguing/acquisitions.
Respondent six:
Here it is used as a staging post between ALC3 and ALC5.
