Our Photography Dept. holds at present a collection of c 15,000 slides,
mostly of plants (with detailed variety characteristics, and diseases). They
are now creating digital images as well, and are looking at ways of
cataloguing, organising, and retrieving the images efficiently. (Sounds like
a job for the librarian!)
Eventually the slide collection will be completely digitised and the
database accessible from on our Intranet.
I have been asked to help by suggesting "a filing system" for the
collection, and input information for description of each image (e.g.
metadata). Our library uses Horizon LMS, shared with other Scottish
Executive libraries.
I am not sure whether to use Horizon, set up a new database e.g. on Access,
or consider buying in an "off the shelf" product?
Has anyone any experience of this, and any advice to offer?
Many thanks,
Lynda
