An Introduction to Streaming & Web-casting

This one-day course gives participants an understanding of the basic
technologies and problems associated with streaming time-based media, and to
then investigate how to use these technologies to web-cast live.
The course covers:
- basic server technologies; problems, how streaming works, bandwidth,
compression
- the benefits of web-casting, including access, automatic archiving,
interactive broadcasting
- web-casting pre-production and production
- practical exercises and demonstrations
- coverage of the 'big 3' streaming technologies: Real, Microsoft Windows
Media, Apple QuickTime
The practical and economic considerations of different technologies are
compared, and participants are encouraged to consider the abilities and
restraints of the web-cast when creating original footage.
Derek Richards is founder of HyperJAM, (www.hyperjam.co.uk) which provides
digital media services for live events to the arts, entertainment, and
corporate sectors: their clients include the ICA, FilmFour and the Notting
Hill Carnival.
