Black Practitioners and Learners' Network (BPLN)
NIACE (The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education) Black
Practitioners and Learners' Network have recently launched a new website at
http://www.niace.org.uk/bpln.
The website provides information about key developments in the field of
adult education and provides a forum for practitioners and learners involved
in the post-16 learning and skills sector to discuss and respond to national
policies and strategic developments that impact on their work and/or
learning opportunities.
Within the context of this Network 'Black' is defined as "...members of
African, African Caribbean, Asian and other communities who are oppressed by
racism."
Divided into 14 sections the website features:
* News bulletins about important issues relating to adult education -
e.g. details about the Government's Centre for Excellence in Leadership and
the wider Success for All strategy covering post-16 teaching and learning in
England and Wales (see www.successforall.gov.uk)
* A strategic documents section providing access to full-text reports
about the Community Empowerment Fund, the national strategy for improving
adult basic skills (Skills for Life), research on the role of Black women's
voluntary sector organisations, statistics on asylum, etc.
* Links to a range of sites that offer training and employment
opportunities
* A section offering guidance on how equalities legislation - such as
the Race Relations Amendment Act 2000, the Disability Discrimination Act and
the Sex Discrimination Act - impacts on policies, action planning and
working practices within the learning and skills sector
* Details of how to become a member of the BPLN and access to an
online membership form at www.niace.org.uk/bpln/membership.htm.
* Online access to copies of the BPLN newsletter and a listing of
NIACE publications, etc.
Currently the Black Practitioners' and Learners' Network has regional
co-ordinators based in London and the SE, the North West, Midlands and
Yorkshire & Humberside. It is hoped that other co-ordinators will be
appointed as the membership grows, and that the website will become a
vehicle for co-ordinating and providing feedback on national and regional
events, conferences and campaigns.
