I received five replies to my enquiry (reproduced below), giving a wide range of experience and opinion. Using a courier service, hiring a van and driver, and leasing or purchasing one's own van were all mentioned. There was no clear favourite amongst these options, although libraries running their own service probably won on points.

Subject: Vans
We're considering the most effective transport system for shuttling library material to and from our remote store, and round our multi-site libraries. We currently use a commercial firm, but wish to plan for a cost-effective larger-scale operation. One option is the purchase of our own library van. I would be interested to hear from anyone with relevant experience to share. As usual, I will summarise the findings for the list.
Many thanks.
