Hi,
We've had a subscription to Pacing and Clinical Electrophysiology ever
since 1991. I had set up access to it on Catchword a couple of years
ago, when it was published by Futura Publishing Company, Inc. and first
went online on what was then Catchword. The link on our OPAC (although
we've changed the domain name) is still pointing to
http://www.ingentaselect.com/rpsv/cw/futura/01478389/contp1.htm, and we
might not have known any different if we hadn't have signed up for the
"full" Blackwell Publishing deal for 2003. Now, this isn't a
recommendation to sign up for the deal, but it illustrates the
difficulty of tracking cases where journals have changed publisher, and
the accidental ways one has to find out!
We've been doing the "annual" trawl of our Blackwell Publishing
journals, (a title by title check against 4 separate lists i.e. list of
titles in the consortial deal, the list of titles accessible to us on
Synergy, the list of titles we previously had access to under the "full"
Blackwell Publishing deal for 2002 and prior years and a list of our
Blackwell Publishing subscriptions) to see what was new, what was new on
Synergy, what had ceased publication, what had changed title etc. for
the Blackwell Publishing deal when I noticed that Pacing and Clinical
Electrophysiology was appearing as a "new for 2003" title on Synergy and
the consortial list. On further investigation I found out that Futura
was now part of the Blackwell Publishing empire.
Checking the link on our OPAC to this title i.e.
http://www.ingentaselect.com/rpsv/cw/futura/01478389/contp1.htm led us
to what we thought was the old publisher page in that there was no new
content since the end of 2002. We duly closed our entry on our OPAC to
this title, and added a link to the title on Synergy, which still has
only 2003 content for this title. This then became one of a number of
"problem" titles that always appear when doing this kind of checking.
I then browsed the list of journals by title on Ingenta Select and found
the following link to Pacing and Clinical Electrophysiology i.e.
http://www.ingentaselect.com/rpsv/ij/bsc/01478389/contp1.htm, where I
found all the content i.e. back to Vol. 23(10) (2000). Great I thought,
until I realised that we didn't have access to the 2003 content on
Ingenta Select. This is strange because we should have access to all
those journals that are part of the "full" Blackwell Publishing deal for
2003 (and prior years), but then this isn't the first example of this
problem with access to our Blackwell Publishing titles on Ingenta
Select. I then checked ingenta for this title at:
http://www.ingenta.com/journals/browse/bsc/pace where as expected all
the content back to Vol.23(10) (2000) was available. This time we did
have access to all the available online content, as we would have
expected to be the case on Ingenta Select.
This example raises a number of questions for me:
1. Why isn't there a redirect in place from the journal page for this
title on Ingenta Select under the former publisher i.e.
http://www.ingentaselect.com/rpsv/cw/futura/01478389/contp1.htm to the
title under the new publisher at:
http://www.ingentaselect.com/rpsv/cw/bsc/01478389/contp1.htm?
2. We didn't have a link on our OPAC to ingenta previously, but on
checking COPAC two entries were linking to what I can only assume was
the syntax for the journal on ingenta under its former publisher i.e.
http://www.ingenta.com/journals/browse/futura/pace. Selecting this link
leads to a message saying "Sorry, we are unable to display the page you
requested at this time." Could not redirection have been put in place on
ingenta for this title?
3. Once again we appear to be getting different access on Ingenta
compared to Ingenta Select for our Blackwell Publishing titles that are
part of consortial deals.
4. Why doesn't Synergy have the same content for this title as Ingenta
and Ingenta Select? If it hasn't happened yet, will it be happening and
if so, how will we ever find out, except by checking Synergy on a
regular basis?
5. Why are these "dead" pages not being removed from Ingenta Select?
I think that's everything I wanted to say. And now to the next "problem"
on the list of things to try and sort out, but that's another story.
Cheers
Lesley
