19TH INTERNATIONAL LEARNED JOURNALS SEMINAR
Who pays for the Free Lunch? Alternative funding models for research communication.
Friday 4 April 2003, One Birdcage Walk, London SW1H 9JJ
Chair: Declan Butler, Nature
Maximising access to research information is an objective which benefits everyone - authors as well as readers. However, many of the processes of traditional publication are still valuable - some more than ever, in a world of 'information overload'. These processes still cost money, irrespective of the medium of publication, and the costs of carrying them out still have to be borne at some point in the information chain - the big question is, by whom? And how do we get from here to there?
In this seminar, speakers will explore the rationale for 'Open Access', look at the functions of publication which still need to be preserved, and examine actual projects and forward-looking initiatives which test alternative funding models.
