Dear Colleagues
Does anyone have any recent experience of licence negotiations with publishers
/ suppliers in the run up to an institutional merger?
Cardiff University and the University of Wales College of Medicine are due to
merge in August 2004. As the majority of subscriptions run from January to
December, we are investigating our licence options for 2004, and would be
grateful for any information that you can pass on if you've already been through
this process.
We'll be contacting each supplier / publisher individually, but to aid our
planning process we're trying to gain an idea of how much extra we may have to
pay in subscriptions costs. We know these figures will vary depending upon size
of institution. The types of question we're hoping for answers to are:
1)
What was the percentage increase in subscriptions to databases and ejournals
after the merger?
2)
Were there any difficulties with licences for 3 or 5 year deals where only one
of the merging institutions had a subscription?
3)
If your merger was part way through a subscription year, ( e.g. August) how did
the publishers deal with the licences if:
a) both institutions subscribed separately pre- merger
b) only one subscribed pre- merger
4)
Were any publishers particularly helpful / unhelpful?
We'd be grateful for any comments and feedback on this process. As mergers
seem to be growing trend, I will summarise any replies for the list.
best wishes
Linda Davies
