Subject: RE: Adobe Reader 6.0 printing now works on Ingenta
Dear Kirsty
Well we seem to have this problem again this morning with the following
journal:
http://saturn.bids.ac.uk/cgi-bin/ds_deliver/1/u/d/ISIS/7493476.1/ap/mg/2
000/00000011/00000001/art00121/BFDCC7D93EE12D2510669043134C63082FA072BA2

Management Accounting Research, 2000, 11, 65]88
doi:10.1006rmare.1999.0121
This is following the 'Academic Press' link in ingenta.
The message is as before 'document cannot be printed' but it does
actually print the first page only.
However, different to before in that saving and opening in adobe
directly gives the same result, whereas previously this did work.
Not sure how widespread this is!
Thanks
Sandra

Subject: Adobe Reader 6.0 printing now works on Ingenta
Dear Sandra et al-
As of this morning we have made some changes to Ingenta.com to shorten
the URLs of PDF files and circumvent the bug with the Adobe 6.0 plug-in.
All PDFs now appear to be printing without any problems.
Please let me know if you encounter any other problems with this latest
version of the reader.
Best wishes,

Subject: Adobe 6.0 printing problem
Hi Sandra
The problem you describe is not specific to Ingenta. It seems to be a
problem with the Acrobat Reader 6.0 plug-in (not the browser, as we have
been able to replicate the problem in IE and Netscape), and is affecting
the PDF files supplied to us by some publishers but not all.
Adobe's helpdesk inform me that there's a new limitation in Adobe Reader
6.0 whereby "PDFs with file names longer than 256 characters will not
print". We think this could be the cause, as although our actual PDF
file names are not very long, the URL displayed in the browser when you
are using Ingenta.com includes various session information and therefore
often exceeds 256 characters. Again, this is true of many sites and is
not specific to Ingenta.
Adobe say that this was not a limitation in version 5, and only affects
the 6.0 plug-in. Their advice was to always open the Reader separately
- not particularly helpful I know.
We will continue to investigate to see what we can do, and will
certainly alert the list if and when we hear of a patch or upgrade from
Adobe that fixes this new problem. For the moment, all earlier versions
will allow you to print without problems.
