The People's Network: a turning point for public libraries. First findings
application/pdf
Description: This is a 23-page report on the People's Network, a major
government-led initiative to bring internet access and online services to
the whole UK population. This report is intended to provide an early
assessment of the impact of the People's Network on the users. This report
is based on an examination of the October 2002 survey returns from public
library authorities, supplemented with specific case studies from 86
library authorities. The report outlines the role of public libraries in
making available documents and other records, the use of the People's
Network by disadvantaged groups and typical software applications (in
addition to web browsing and email). Sections in the report discuss in
detail the impact of the network on learning, finding work, personal
identity, community enrichment, social inclusion, culture and creativity,
patterns of usage, use and access policy, impact on other library services,
technical achievement and considerations for the future. Resource 2003,
