Dear List Members,
I have been extremely surprised and dismayed at some of the responses I have
been reading on the mail list regards pay
and pay parity.
I am particularly concerned that some members think that salary issues are
in some way non issues.
Having worked in a number of libraries in Australia, New Zealand and now UK
- I can assure you that the issue of what librarians are paid is an issue
that concerns the profession as a whole throughout these three countries. It
is not only the UK.
Furthermore - there are, I surmise, very few librarians who would argue
that they do this job just because they" love it " - and pay issues are
really " not our concern."
Historically - to my mind - women (and lets face it most librarians still
are women) - shoot themselves in the foot by thinking they have some kind of
calling in their work and therefore they ought to remain quiet over how much
money they get for the job.
This is reminiscent of 19th centurey governesses in family homes!
I suggest that Pay/ Parity and Status are VERY MUCH issues that we as a
professional group ought to be dealing with
and until we all see it this way Librarians will remain in their underpaid
lowly positions.
