Hi everyone
I set up this list back in January 1998 in an effort to establish a forum for
Charter candidates (such as myself at the time) to talk about things pertinent
to the Chartering process. In particular I was paranoid that I might be unaware
of some vital issue of professional concern and might spectacularly fail to
Charter because I hadn't mentioned it in my PDR, so I wanted to be able to
discuss with other Chartering candidates what they were talking about in their
PDRs, get an insight into issues of concern in other sectors, etc! Also, it was
intended to provide a forum to discuss technicalities of the Chartering process.
It was expected that most of the members would be Charter candidates, but hoped
that the recently Chartered might stay on to give the benefit of their
experiences. Also welcome were chartering candidates' Supervisors, and CILIP (or
LA back then) staff with responsibility for professional qualifications, who may
be able to answer specific queries and prevent/correct "Chinese whisper" rumours
from circulating.
The list tends to go quiet for a bit, then have a flurry of conversation. After
every flurry of conversation there's also a flurry of people unsubscribing;
usually because they'd forgotten they were still subscribed until posts reminded
them! Guess what. Lots of people have unsubscribed today! I hope that's for the
same reason rather than frustration about topics being discussed....
I'd hope that everyone on this list is committed to Chartering, and the
Chartering process in general. I wouldn't want to stifle discussion on these
topics, but this list may not be the best place for more general moans about the
profession. In particular I wouldn't want to discourage any enthusiastic
newcomers to the profession by having threads in which people bemoan their
wasted life as a Librarian! These subjects can be discussed elsewhere (e.g.
lis-cilip the "daddy" that's 3 years younger than this list ;-) so the new
professionals have plenty of opportunity to see a varied view. However, this
list is primarily intended as a support network for people who WANT to Charter
:-)

p.s. So far in my current job I've been to Cambridge, Liverpool, London and Cork
for conferences; Stratford-upon-Avon, London (lots of times), Plymouth and
various other Uk places for courses; and may in the future be going to Germany
and Siberia on library projects. It can be done ;-D
