I agree with Ileana's comment. I originally joined this list simply to post
an advert for a Chartership event I am organising on May 8th. Since then I
have lost the plot and could not remember what the list was about since I
posted to several lists. When someone mentioned that the list was actually
for Chartership candidates I was really quite surprised!
I think I will leave the list as it not for me. I chartered in 1995 and have
always worked in law firms. The pay is not spectacular but not bad either.
Over the years I have met many people in careers that are not well paid
including marketing, charities, nursing, architecture, law (yes law unless
you are in the large commercial firms) etc etc. That doesn't mean low pay is
right but it is a trade-off against other factors such as hours, job
satisfaction etc. Work out what is important to you in this trade-off and go
for it. That's my advice...

Is it really worth going on about this? I thought it was a supply and demand
matter. If
there weren't enough people wanting to do this job, I am sure the pay would
increase in
order to attract people but, as such, I haven't heard of a shortage of
librarians.
Although I am no happier than others in respect of levels of pay, I think
though that we
should concentrate on chartership issues on this particular list and deal
with pay
conditions and status separately. I joined the list mainly to find out more
about courses,
people's experience and any advice they can offer on this matter and I hope
we will stick
to this.
Thank you.

Oh to have the luxury to do extra degrees on the side and have them paid
for!!!
Sounds like librarianship offered you some rewards then?
And did you really need a mentor to tell you that librarianship wouldn't
give you the
opportunity to go on month long trips? If that's what yuo wanted then you
should have been
a travelling salesman!
