As a school librarian, my experience is that at last, school managers are
beginning to move libraries up the priority list and are spending some money
on them. (Does this have something to do with the fact that we are at last
seen as part of the IT revolution?)
However, school librarians have a battle to make sure that they have a say
in how the money is spent, to create a well-functioning library that can
make a difference to pupils' learning. Too often, school managers look no
further than the photo opportunities provided by tidy row of bookshelves.
Just look at any local newspaper - most press photos are taken in the
library.
The idea of a soap set in a library is a good one, but please, not with the
same scriptwriters as 'Teachers'. We need to change our image, but not be
made to look fools.
