Dear All,
As promised a run down on responces to my weekend opening straw poll:
Quite a high proportion of institutions still don't open at weekends, but of
the many who do the hiring of weekend and evening staff seems to be the norm
(especially in smaller services). In larger organisations existing library
staff cover some weekends on a rota basis getting time back in lieu during
the week. A number of libraries simply offer a basic weekend service,
issues/returns, basic IT supervision, etc. Once again the larger
organisations with high weekend demand offer a full service, including
enquiries desk, etc. The proportion of professional/para-professional staff
effected the level of service offered at weekends. A good number of those
who provide weekend opening, offer hours on both Saturday and Sunday.
If anyone would like copies of the emails I was sent or further details,
please drop me a line.
Thanks to everyone who replied and offered a helpful insight into the
weekend workings of libraryland! I now feel fully informed should the call
come from senoir management for library weekend opening hours here at
NSCD...
Best wishes
Sam
