Hello,
I would like to thank Marion Huckle who is the Head of Memberships, Careers and
Qualifications at CILIP and who has sent me an email confirming my thoughts on this in
response to Dermot's enquiry. I hope you will also find it useful.Thank you Marion.

...you have provided a timely and succinct reminder of the importance of and impact of
these issues on LIS work. You have added some useful information on these issues to that
already posted to the list by other candidates. You have also provided a helpful guide to
some key legislation for those whose daily work does not bring them into contact with
strategic/legislative issues on a regular basis, who thus might initially find the
requirement to demonstrate an understanding of national and international legislation and
to comment on issues relating to international and trans-border information transfer more
challenging. However, I should also add that it is rarely an issue that the Board find is
not adequately addressed in applications for Chartered Membership. "

Hello,
Until just about two months ago I worked for the Information Commissioner which is an
official appointed by the queen and it is responsible for administering the Data
Protection Act and the Freedom of Information Act.
Trans-border information transfer refers to personal data transfers outside the UK and
the EU. We had a lot of enquiries by various data controllers on this issue as it can be a
complicated area. I know this is not, strictly speaking, a librarian's job, but as an
information professional, I am sure everybody needs to know about theses acts especially
if they handle personal data. There is a lot of information (maybe more than you would
need to know at this stage) on their website www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk . I
believe that this is what CILIP may have in mind when they ask you to talk about this but
I wouldn't know for sure as I haven't chartered yet. I would be grateful if those who know
could confirm this .

Dear all
Recently got around finally to finishing a retrospective PPDP for Route B
(having already done over 2 yrs service). However one section is sadly
lacking from Section 4: Information Environment & Policy.
Its 4.3 (How the candidate will obtain an understanding of....)the
importance of international and trans-border information transfer. I'm
afraid both my boss and I are at a loss for this one - so obviously I
haven't gained an understanding in my prefessional service thus far!!
Any tips from anyone?
