The Microbial Risk Assessment team at the Health Protection Agency, Porton
Down, Salisbury currently require a temporary GIS Assistant.
The team are developing an advanced GIS capability based on ESRI ArcGIS
software, ArcSDE and Oracle 9i. ArcIMS, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst and
Geostatistical Analyst and MapInfo/MapBasic are also used.
GIS is regarded a core tool within the team of 10, and supports projects
ranging from mapping the risk to the UK population from infectious disease
through to interfacing with mathematical models of disease transmission
through a population.
We have access to many national mapping datasets from the Ordnance Survey,
and also national environmental and demographic data.
The position is initially for 5 weeks with very good prospects for
extension on a month by month reviewable basis. The GIS assistant will
support the work of the Senior Scientist responsible for developing the
capability.
Primarily the role will focus on -
1.)GIS data conversion, capture and geocoding.
2.)Sourcing relevant environmental, ecological and base mapping datasets.
3.)Documentation of datasets.
4.)Support development of GIS demonstration material (eg maps,posters,
presentations)
5.) GIS support as required
The job pays an hourly rate in the region of £10 and is anticipated to
start at the end of July/beginning of August
A graduate is preferred with some experience of GIS and UK mapping
datasets and sources. This is a good opportunity to work with the latest
technologies and datasets.
