PhD Studentship,
University of Coventry,
School of Science and Environment,
‘Volcanic hazard assessment and 3D terrain modelling at Arenal volcano,
Costa Rica’
Arenal is small stratovolcano that has been in semi-continual activity
since 1968. It erupts lava flows together with frequent explosions and
elevated activity has generated several pyroclastic flows. Over the last
20 years tourism at Arenal volcano, Costa Rica has increased considerably
and consequently the risk posed by hazardous activity is likely to be
rising. This studentship will use a number of techniques to examine hazard
and risk at Arenal. Volcanic activity over the last 35 years has built a
new cone, the growth of which has not been quantified. The student will
quantify the magma flux at Arenal using digital elevation models.
Generation of (DEMs) will use both ground based surveying and remotely
sensed techniques including Radar interferometry and Digital photogrammetry
The studentship will also document landuse change using remote sensing
allowing the vulnerability and risk to be quantified. Training in
necessary image processing techniques will be provided. Fieldwork for
ground truth verification of landuse change and control for Digital
Elevation Models will be undertaken by the student.
Experience:
· A good first degree (upper second or first class) or Masters in
Geography, Earth Science or a related subject.
· Some experience of Remote sensing and Geographical Information
Systems at undergraduate and / or masters level.
· Driving licence and a willingness and ability to undertake
fieldwork in Costa Rica.
Supervisors, (to whom informal enquiries may be made): Dr Paul Cole
([log in to unmask]) and Dr Nigel Trodd ([log in to unmask]), University of
Coventry and Prof Geoff Wadge at ESSC, University of Reading.
