Purdue University is again organizing a field trip to the Alps (see below).
This trip is designed for undergraduate Earth Science students, and
students from any university can sign up and receive credit. It will be a
great experience for any student interested in geology. The two last trips
were a huge success, with students participating from many different
universities.

The Magic Swiss Alps
Exploring Geology and Culture in Switzerland and Italy
EAS 591S 3 Credits

Dates:
July 7 - 24, 2003
Purpose:
This trip will further your understanding of geological processes and raise
your awareness of Alpine ecosystems. You will be immersed in three
different cultures. We will explore all aspects of Geology by visiting
classic geological localities; an underground research laboratory; a
fissure filled with gigantic crystals; and the construction site of the
world's longest tunnel. We will also study important historic monuments,
flowers and wildlife, and learn how geological phenomena affect the daily
life of mountain communities.
Study Topics:
General Geology; Evolution of the Alps as a Mountain Belt; Geomorphology;
Glaciology; Alpine Ecosystems; Environmental Science and Policy; Energy
Production Systems; Waste Management and Recycling; Tunnel Construction
Technology; Historic and Strategic Importance of the Alps; Cultural
Anthropology; History; Architecture.
Prerequisites:
Consent of instructor
Credit Requirements:
Students must read assigned papers; submit a research paper about a
specific topic (submitted before the trip); prepare an oral presentation
(given during the trip); keep a detailed written record of all lectures;
and perform various field exercises. Auditors are welcome!
Important:
This trip will include several long hikes in Alpine terrain and at high
altitude. You must be in good physical shape to participate. Accommodation
will be in small inns and simple mountain cabins in Switzerland and Italy.
