Dear Peta Louise Cook,
We have replica flint hand axes on display in the London before London
gallery on prehistory here at the Museum of London. They are on open
display, mounted for touch alongside original artefacts, and film of the
replica being knapped. Similar display techniques are used for other replica
and original objects throughout the gallery.
There's a large website about the gallery if you want general info on it.
All the best,
Jane Sarre

Subject: Replicas
Dear All,
We are in the preliminary stages of putting together a small bid to help
make our archaeology gallery into a more tactile hands-on learning zone.
Part of this means we need to create replicas of artefacts, in particular
lithic artefacts (hand axes etc) for use in handling areas.
* Does anyone know of any companies who specialise in producing
replica artefacts?
* Has anyone been involved with a similar project?
* Could anyone recommend any museums for best practice visits?
* Does anyone know of any consultation or evaluation work thats been
produced, relating to the use of handling collections, hands-on displays or
interactives in galleries for my research?
Thanks in advance.
