Since we've entered the highly unstable territory of declaring such and
such a film to be 'the best [insert genre] movie ever made', I will
throw all caution to the wind and call Ferrara's Addiction (already
mentioned, I know) the best vampire movie ever made. You can
practically *smell* the night in this film.
Also pretty interesting as a film which flirts with generic conventions
but never quite comes out as a vampire movie is Claire Denis's Trouble
Every Day (2001).
I'm about to do a whistle-stop survey of vampires-in-cinema literature
myself, so if anything really grabs me I'll let you know. Thanks for
the Toufic reference, whoever it was...
