Hello,
It was a spur of a moment message for something that that did not quite fit
together for ages, and I chanced upon a file.
It also applies to the -hamm endings as well. The explanation of 'hemmed-in
land' it is just not quite satisfactory to me.
The entry for 'Toponmy' in Encylopaedia Britannica '97 CD-ROM version does
not have an author mentioned. However, under the entry for Onomastics, the
author is:
L.Zg. Ladislav Zgusta. Professor of Linguistics and of Classics; Director,
Center for Advanced Studies, University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Author of Kleinasiatische Personennamen and
others.
I do not have time to think about this right now, until my current job is
finished (then another one comes along), but I would be interested to know
if there was been any further debate on the -ora and -hamm endings since
Margaret Gelling's books.
I am happier with precise meanings like 'muddy place farm'.
Cheers
Andy Horton.
