Dear All
Please find below a notice of a forthcoming exhibition by Hugh Mendes,
entitled 'Vote Freedom'. Hugh is one of the artists I studied in my recent
research into observational drawing, and drawing continues to inform his
practice as a painter. I think it could be a very interesting show.
Yours
George.

>PRESS RELEASE The war in Iraq was perhaps characterised more than anything
>by the prominance and transparency of its corresponding propoganda war.
>Therefore a 'war artist', or even anti-war artist, could stay in his studio
>with unprecedented access to the events as they unfolded. Hugh Mendes has
>been 'embedded' in his east end studio following the relentless 24hr. live
>coverage. In this forthcoming show his paintings, gleaned from press
>coverage, raise such issues as the artist's role in society as commentator
>and provocateur and the political relevance of art. They draw attention to
>the chaos of democracy imposed, globalisation, and the 'rape' of a country
>for its oil.
>
>Mendes has been painting images of press cuttings since his MA Graduation
>on September 11, 2001. He had a solo show in November that year: "into
>Manhattan's memory" and was subsequently included in group shows at Hales
>gallery and Jeffrey Charles gallery. He follows these exhibitions with a
>new body of work: 'Vote Freedom' at the Indo, a gallery and bar directly
>opposite the East London Mosque. This is a typically poignant juxtaposition
>and allows the images to be seen while they are still fresh in our minds
>and the paint is still wet on the canvas…
