Dear Andrea, I have done research on young children using drawing for
designing (subject of Ph.D) and most of the first half of it is on my web site
- www.designdrawing.net - plus there is a link to the Kent NGfL site which has
it in more detail from a "how to teach it" point of view. I would be keen to
here about your experiences. My e-mail is [log in to unmask] (I don't often use
the yahoo one that's listed on the site). Suggested reading: John Matthews
"The Art of Childhood and Adolescence" 1999 The Falmer Press. Although texts
relating to adults are fairly useful, the differences between a child's view
of the world and that of an adult (especially a design professional or artist)
are very large and so parallels cannot really be made. Bridget Egan has
written a couple of papers about the child's perception of the purpose of the
drawing, which is something I feel is probably more important than she
realises - it has become central to my analysis instrument. The Big Draw is
the UK project to encourage drawing and Drawing Power is the allied research
project.
