My first question would be, what do children understand 'engineering' to be. Engineering in adult perception is difficult enough, before doing my arts degree course, I worked in engineering - mechanical and electrical for 20 years. The amount of people I met who had no idea what it meant was huge. You may need to address the question in a simpler form with examples of what engineering could be / is, especially as 'engineering' is a coverall for a huge variety of jobs / industry sectors.
May be on the drawing side, ask them to draw what an engineer looks like, uses at work (eg tools), what do they make etc etc.
