This sounds great.  I particularly like the cassette tape idea whic
resonates with my own notion of 'phenomenological drawing' - the stuidy
of how things draw themselves - but this has the added performative
value.

Thanks for the info.
This sounds really interesting. At the moment we seem to have two
strands developing.
The initial concept of developing a growing virtual line and another
which is a group of more public art or conceptual pieces that take the
idea of line drawing out into ways of mapping physical terrain or mental
concepts.
For example one proposal is to gather together all those bits of
recording tape that are found wound around trees and drifting across
streets and to splice them together for a journey through the sound
scapes of forgotten technology. Others are more akin to GPS drawing,
(see http://www.gpsdrawing.com/draw.htm ).
Either the original proposed web site has an area for the hosting of
line drawing concepts and ideas or there is perhaps a way of
co-ordinating events across the north and getting separate funding to
support a catalogue/concept development.
The various contexts for the use of line drawing seem to be part of a
definition of what it is. Teams of researchers/artists could be drawn
together to survey new territories, in a similar way to that of the
original ordinance survey teams that went out and established
trigonometric measuring points.

I would be interested in contributing 'transpenlines' between Leeds and

Manchester.  These ecologically significant markings include could:
1.  follow a continuous topographic contour.  At present, I have no
idea how far South or North one needs to go to achive this, or if it is

possible.  Ideally, the line will be maintained at a height above
floodplains - a dry meander to denote a safe level for building
development.
2.  another 'transpenline' might follow the continuity of biodiversity

(nature), identifying the breaks and possible places for restoration.
3.  following the paths of river channels and cannals, water would be
identified as the medium for tracing many points of confluence and near

convergence
