Hi all
Glad to hear that someone else is concerned about this. The letter came to
me [as DP co-ordinator] via the University Secretary and was addressed to
the Chief Officer [presumably the Principal/Vice-Chancellor or whatever].
It seems to me that if we are under a statutory obligation to supply the
data HESA asks for, then it is enough for us to say so in our DP statement
to students. It is up to HESA to account for what it does with that
information. What we may well do in future, though, is in our own DP
statement refer the student to the HESA web site where there is a wealth of
information. This includeds instructions on how to request HESA to desist
from using your data for non-statutory purposes at
http://www.hesa.ac.uk/dataprot/contact.htm
Interestingly, the website also has the sentence
> Click here to see the collection notices about HESA data that your HEI
> will have made available to you from 2001.
News to me, I'm afraid. Has anyone else used these notices before?
