In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes
come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing
mention. Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a
short review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large,
and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy
discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these:
Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice
Web Site Archive.
OneStep Industry News
http://www.eevl.ac.uk/onestepnews/
OneStep Jobs
http://www.eevl.ac.uk/onestepjobs/
This is not exactly an impartial choice of Nice Web Site this month, as I
have been involved in the development of both OneStep Industry News and
OneStep Jobs.
Both of these new services from EEVL, the Internet guide to engineering,
mathematics and computing, take advantage of RSS (Really Simple Syndication)
to aggregate content, in the form of headlines, on a subject and
resource-type basis.
If none of that means much to you, don't worry!
Simply stated, OneStep Industry News makes it much easier to scan the latest
industry news headlines from a number of top sources such as trade
publications and publishers, in engineering, mathematics and computing.
Links from the headlines take you to the full story/item at the source web
site.
In a similar way, OneStep Jobs makes it much easier to scan the latest job
vacancies from a number of top sources, including recruitment agencies, in
engineering, mathematics and computing. Links take you to the full job
announcements at the source web site.
Both services are free, and both list only the latest news items or job
announcements.
The default views intermingle items from the various sources, but subject
clusters and individual feeds are also available. A basic search of the
latest items is also available.

8. BOOK REVIEW
---------------------------
Review of:
Engineering and IT Graduate: 2004 entry
Trait Education, Logan House, 110 Church Road, Tiptree, CO5 0AB
ISBN: 0954132998
Free for distribution to final-year undergraduate students, and also
available at: http://www.thecoursesource.co.uk
price where sold #9.99
This is a nicely sized, handy publication for students in a final year of
Engineering and IT courses, or those considering study in the area. It's
produced by thecoursesource, (an excellent website if you haven't seen it)
which is part of the National Grid for learning. While the web site has
details of all institutions and courses across the UK, this printed version
restricts itself to the post-graduate Engineering and IT field, making the
information easily manageable and digestible.
The book is split into sections. The first part gives information on doing
post-graduates including why to do it; costs; and details of funding and
support. Then there is a page for each professional body giving details
about them. This is followed by the details of course opportunities,
announcements and listings.
If you're a final year undergraduate, or considering going back to do
post-graduate study, this book is well worth a look. For final year students
it's free and should be being distributed around universities about now!
It's also available PDF - along with a few other subject specific guides -
through the web site above.
