Vth ESOCITE
10-12 March 2004
Toluca, M=E9xico

The ESOCITE conferences are a space of presentation and discussion of
research results as well as of reflection about scientific and
technological activities, mainly in Latin America. On this occasion the
main topic is The Building of Technoscience In Contemporary Latin
American Society. Themes are: Technoscientific Processes: relationships
between scientific disciplines and industry, Status of the Society of
Knowledge in Latin America, Technoscience-Environment-Society,
Technoscience and its spatial-temporal placement and displacement,
Technoscience, Public Policies, Politic Participation and Democracy,
Ethics and Legalization of Technoscience and Epistemology, Social
Sciences and Technoscience. The ESOCITE conferences have gathered
researchers dedicated to social studies of technoscientific activities
in Latin America on four occasions. In the past, the conferences had
been organized by Dr. Pablo Kreimer from the Universidad Nacional de
Quilmes in Buenos Aires (1994), Dr. Hebe Vessuri from the Instituto
Venezolano de Investigaciones Cient=EDficas in Caracas (1996), Dr. =
Mar=EDa Josefa Santos from the Instituto de Investigaciones Sociales in
the UNAM in Quer=E9taro (1998) and Dr. Renato Dagnino from the
Universidad = Estadual de Campinas in Campinas (2000); with an ever
increasing number of presentations. The Vth ESOCITE was going to be held
in Buenos Aires but the current situation known to all made it
impossible to hold it there. However, the need of knowing, exchanging
and promoting studies on technoscience in Latin America arose from
academic community who demanded the conference to be held. In this
context, Dr. Antonio Arellano (a researcher from the Universidad
Aut=F3noma of the State of Mexico=92s Faculty of Political Sciences and
Public Administration) has been in talks with some of the former
researchers-organizers and some relevant Latin American researchers on
this issue, whereby the agreement was to hold the conference in Toluca,
Mexico. University authorities support this initiative in order to take
up again a space for reflection and discussion on the role that
technoscience plays in the current Latin American society.
