UTILITY DEREGULATION
Media Diversity at Risk
http://www.corpwatch.org/issues/PID.jsp?articleid=6850
On June 2, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will vote on changes
to government rules on media ownership. FCC chairman, Michael Powell, and
the two other Republican commissioners on the five-member Commission, will
vote in favor of loosening government rules which limit the size and reach
of the nation s largest broadcasting, newspaper and cable companies. The
rule changes to be considered would decrease media diversity and allow large
media corporations to merge and create monopolies. The corporations who
seek to gain from the deregulation are the well known big five: Viacom,
News Corporation, AOL Timer Warner, General Electric, and Walt Disney.
