CoWord Demo Announcement
It is our great pleasure to announce the public demonstration
of CoWord (http://reduce.qpsf.edu.au/coword) -- the world-first
real-time collaborative word processor, which allows multiple
users to edit the same MS Word document at the same time over
the Internet.
To existing MS Word users, CoWord allows them to enjoy advanced
real-time multi-user editing capabilities in their familiar
MS Word environment. As CoWord retains the "look-and-feel"
and functionalities of MS Word, no additional training is
required to use CoWord. CoWord supports unconstrained editing
style, giving users complete freedom in their way of using CoWord
to support individual and group work.
To collaborative system designers, CoWord demonstrates an
innovative and powerful technology that integrates state-of-the-art
collaborative editing techniques with off-the-shelf single-user
editors in a collaboration-transparent way, i.e., without changing
the source code of the existing single-user application. The
demonstrated technology can be and is being used to transparently
upgrade a wide range of single-user interactive applications into
multi-user collaborative applications.
To collaborative computing researchers, CoWord is a powerful
research vehicle for studying a range of challenging research
issues involved in building collaborative computing systems.
The construction and usability study of CoWord and its predecessors
(the family of REDUCE systems) have played and is continuing
to play a crucial role in advancing state-of-the-art collaborative
editing technologies and their applications.
