Flinders University, Australia, School of Law
LECTURESHIP IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE (Level B - Continuing)
Flinders University is located in Adelaide (South Australia), a city of over one
million people. Adelaide's geographical diversity, temperate Mediterranean-
style climate, inexpensive and relaxed lifestyle make it an appealing
environment in which to work and live. We don't suffer from drizzle, slush or
traffic jams. We manage quite well with extremely good food, wine and
beaches. Despite these distractions, the School of Law is developing a
strong reputation for innovative teaching and research. One of our research
and teaching concentrations lies within criminology.
In Australia, as in the UK, the terms 'criminal justice' and 'criminology' are
virtually interchangeable. Law Schools teach at undergraduate level, all
universities have doctoral programs. The academic hierarchy starts at
lecturer and proceeds via criteria-based promotion through the levels of
lecturer, senior lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor. A 'continuing'
position has an initial 3-year probationary period and might be regarded as of
the same nature as a 'tenurable' position in UK terms. There is provision for
the University to contribute to international relocation expenses. Student
contact hours for staff are currently about eight hours a week over two 13-
week semesters/year.
This is a new Level B Continuing LECTURESHIP IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE
available from 2 February, 2004. Criminal Justice forms a major within the
Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Behavioural Science degrees with a first-
year intake of 200-250 students. The Law School administers the program
and staffs many of the topics within it. The Law faculty includes academic
staff from Australia, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, New Zealand,
Malaysia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
We are looking for someone who can teach in at least one of the core
introductory criminology topics at first and second year level, and offer an
elective topic within the field of criminology to Criminal Justice and Law
students, and eventually contribute to the Honours and planned postgraduate
programs.

plus 1. publications or 2. extensive professional experience in one of these
areas; an ongoing commitment to research in the field of criminology and
criminal justice; a commitment to interactive forms of teaching; and good
communication and interpersonal skills.
The current salary scale for a Level B lectureship is $53,788-$63,871
(Australian dollars). This scale is currently the subject of industrial
negotiations at Unversity level.

The cost of living in Adelaide is well below any equivalent-sized city in the
UK. As some indication, one cost-of-living index put Adelaide at 47% of New
York, with London (91%), LA (84%) and Toronto (60%). That means you can
get a main course meal in a pretty good restaurant for AUD$15.
